Tuesday 8/30

Learning Goal (What will we know): I understand that Earth's biosphere is the part of our planet that supports life, and that living things are connected to all parts of Earth's system.

Relevance (Why do we need to know this?): An understanding of the connections between subsystems on Earth that we can see and understand will help us understand the connections between systems and subsystems that are new to us, and that we cannot easily see.

Success Criteria (What will we do to show that we have reached our learning goal?):
  • Read and understand the Newsela article about the biosphere
  • Correctly answer questions about the article
  • Write a paragraph that describes the connections between biotic and abiotic parts of an ecosystem.

Agenda

Task 1: Question of the Day (pair share): What are Earth's four spheres? Which sphere are we a part of? How are we connected to the other spheres?

Task 2: Go to Newsela and read the assigned article.

Task 3: Go to Google Classroom and complete the "Newsela Biosphere Quiz" assignment.

  • Hint: you can have both tabs (Newsela and the Google Doc) open at the same time so that you can refer to the article to help you answer the questions.

Ticket Out: (on the next blank page in your notebook)

  • Vocabulary: write definitions for the three words "ecosystem", "biotic" and "abiotic".
  • Critical Thinking: write a few sentences describing how these three words are connected to Earth's four spheres.
