Focus Question: What are the steps of the engineering design process?

1. Write the Focus Question in your science notebook and answer it in words and in a diagram.

2. Challenge: To build the tallest spaghetti stick tower you can that can support a cotton ball.

Supplies:

• 20 spaghetti sticks

• 1 yard of masking tape

• 1 yard of string

• 1 large cotton ball

Rules: 

• You only have 30 minutes total to plan and build your tower
• You may talk with your team and draw a plan during the first 10 minutes 
• Only use the supplies provided
• You may break the spaghetti sticks into smaller pieces
• You may cut the string into any size lengths
• You may tear the tape into smaller pieces
• When the timer goes off, you must not touch the tower except to place the cotton ball on the top.
• Do not touch any other towers or you are disqualified.
• The team with the tallest tower that remains standing without anyone touching it, and with the cotton ball on top, wins.
